A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the rapidity and management of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this tragedy,” declared the head of state.
The leader announced that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose term concluded the prior year. This project was a hallmark of his government's developmental goals for the southern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The construction of both train projects was supervised by the nation's military, marking a notable growth of its responsibilities in national works. They were executed at an rapid pace, beating forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently raised significant concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party urged an urgent pause in the building and running of all such projects.
This pause was requested pending a thorough independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."
In reaction, the president insisted that the train had been functioning in total accordance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and management of these national initiatives.
