Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opener Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements from skipper Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered this message in multiple interviews in the wake of England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes versus Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England now face defeat with a match to spare, the captain stated he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," said the England leader.

But, following the opener scored 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "weak men" comment subsequent to England suffered a loss in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently took a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his players had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the messaging from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their prior tenure in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we could do something special entering this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a notional target of 435.

This means, Australia require just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an unassailable 3-0 lead with three Tests.

Defeat would prolong England's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes series defeat.

The current battle will be completed in just eleven days of play – after England fell the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a formidable side. It was always going to be hard touring here to face them. They entered as the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While the opener's performance in Adelaide probably answers questions about his short-term place in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 in the team's second knock on Saturday, extending his poor record versus Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a fifty and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

But, Crawley said any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added he. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is talk from the outside. There's no discussion of that nature on Ollie in the camp," he concluded.
